School of Public Health

Introduction

The School of Public Health is previously known as the School of Preventive Medicine of Normal Bethune University of Medical Sciences. In 1958, Industrial Hygiene Department has been established on the basis of the chemical and atomic prevention, epidemiology, military health and other teaching and research departments in the former Southern Medical University. In 1984 it was renamed the Department of Environmental Medicine and in 1988 it was renamed the College of Preventive Medicine. In June 2000, Norman Bethune was incorporated into the Jilin University. In June 2001, it got the present name.The college began to admit undergraduates in 1960, master's degree students in 1978, and doctor's degree students in 1984. In 2010, the school was awarded the doctorate in public health and preventive medicine, and In 2002, our school became the first experimental schools of MPH (master of public health) in China. Through historical accumulation and scientific research practice, the school of public health has developed into an important talent training base with advantageous characteristic subject groups, integrating medicine, management and law.


School of Public Health Jilin University has four Divisions, Preventive Medicine, Radiation Medicine, Medical Law, Medical informatics and Health management, composed of 14departments, 2 Experimental Teaching centers. It has 3 first-level subjects and 7 second-level subjects. What’s more, It has 6 key laboratories of provincial and ministerial level, 3 provincial innovation research centers, and 14 practical training bases for graduates in and out of the province. Among them, In 2020, "Jilin Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention" was approved by the provincial department of Education as a doctoral workstation. In 2011, the college became the First National Health Supervision Training Base, in 2014 it became a unit of the National Nuclear Radiation Emergency Medical Rescue base, and in 2015 it established a large data research center for Clinical Medicine together with affiliated hospitals of the college, the Health Emergency Research Center of Jilin University was established in 2016 and the Public Health Science Education Base of Jilin Province was approved in 2019. In 2020, it was approved the innovative project of training high-level Applied Public Health Talents. There are 90 teachers, 27 teaching assistants and 15 administrators. Among them,65 teachers with senior professional title and 30 PhD supervisors, the ratio of those with Doctor' s degree is 83% and with Master’s Degree is 95%.


Undergraduate and Graduate Education

There are two undergraduate programs: Preventive Medicine (including nutrition and food hygiene, health laboratory, health law, health informatics) and Radiation Medicine. Among them, Preventive Medicine is one of the first batch of national first-class undergraduate programs, and the undergraduate brand building program of colleges and universities in Jilin province. Radiation Medicine is also first-class undergraduate program and provincial characteristic major in Jilin province during the 12th Five-Year Plan, Jilin province colleges and universities undergraduate professional brand construction. The college plans to enroll 180 students each year and currently has 883 undergraduates. There are 5 provincial-level excellent courses, 2 provincial-level excellent teaching teams and 1 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration center. It has more than 20 undergraduate teaching and practice bases in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Changchun and other places. In 2016, it was approved as one off-campus practice base for college students in Jilin Province.


In terms of graduate education, there is one doctoral program in the first-level discipline: Public Health and Preventive Medicine; There are 7 doctoral programs in the second level disciplines: Epidemiology and Health Statistics, Environmental Hygiene and Labor Hygiene, Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Hygiene Toxicology, Radiology Medicine, Social Medicine and Health Service Management, Medical Informatics (independently established). There are 2 master's degree programs of first-level disciplines: Public Health and Preventive Medicine and Special Medicine; 8 master's degree programs of second-level disciplines: Epidemiology and Health Statistics, Labor Health and Environmental Health, Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Hygiene Toxicology, Social Medicine and Health Management, Medical Informatics, Child and Child Hygiene and Maternal and Child Health, Medical Law (independently established); 1 professional degree authorization center: the first batch of master of public health professional degree (MPH) in China; 3 post-doctoral research stations; there are 14 graduate practice training bases.


Scientific Research

In recent years, the School has made use of the advantages of multi-disciplines, integrated and condensed research directions, and focused on the major public health issues affecting public health with the development concept of "Healthy China" and "prevention first". Research on prevention and control of chronic diseases and infectious diseases, environmental pollution and human health, food safety and radiation safety monitoring, health big data and health policy research, and mental and mental health has been carried out. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, a total of 741 projects were established, including 26 National Natural Science Funds, 2 National Social Science Funds, 2 Humanities and Social Sciences Funds of the Ministry of Education, 4 national key projects and 2 international cooperation projects. The total number of scientific research projects increased by 10% over the period of the 12th Five-Year Plan. A total of 73.5943 million yuan has been spent on scientific research. A total of 616 academic papers have been published. Among them, there are 387 SCI, EI and CSSCI papers. 5 authorized patents. All kinds of scientific research awards 13.


International Collaboration Programs

So far, The School of Public Health has established international cooperation with many colleges or laboratories from America, Canada, Sweden, Netherlands and so on. Many faculties and graduate students have been sent abroad to study, visit and give lectures. Especially, three cooperative projects: one is 4+2 Combined Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Program with Kentucky university, there are two research fields involved:the medical physicist and the management of public health; Another one is 4+4 combined Bachelor’s and Doctoral Degree program; The last one is 4+2 Combined Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Program with the Rutgers University. What’s more, the program of 4+1 with Bristol University is on going. The school teachers attended 7 International Academic Conferences and 107 domestic academic conferences. Teachers went abroad for exchange 6 times and students for exchange 29 times. The number of international students enrolled is 10.

Social Services

Tightly around the "Healthy China, Prevention First" concept of development, in radiological evaluation, food safety testing and evaluation, the elderly population health management, health policy and regulations and industry standards are positive service industry development, continue to expand service areas and areas of cooperation, particularly during the outbreak of the new champions league in 2020, in the development of "Jilin province public health auxiliary waiter" professional standards, writing, publishing the auxiliary waiter guide of public health, 17 held lectures, training of grassroots public health auxiliary staff of more than 2100 people.
