On 31st, October, delegation led by General Makhmut Gareev, President of Russian Academy of Military Sciences, and Lieutenant-General Igor Makushev, Chairman of the Military-Scientific Committee of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation visited Jilin University (JLU) and attended the China-Russia International Academic Forum on World War II – “Resistance and Post-War International Peace”—In Commemoration of the Sept. 18 Incident and the 85th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War” cohosted by JLU and Russian Academy of Military Sciences.
Before the convening of the forum, Li Yuanyuan, President of JLU met with the delegation led by General Makhmut Gareev and Lieutenant-General Igor Makushev. President Li Yuanyuan first expressed his sincere gratitude to General Makhmut Gareev for visiting JLU again at the age of 93, and warmly welcomed Lieutenant General Makushev and the Russian delegation. He pointed out that in this forum, the theme of commemorating the Sept. 18 Incident and the 85th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War would be studied from a historical and realistic perspective, thus having great significance for further consolidating postwar world peace. JLU is willing to increase its investment and support to establish a platform for Chinese and Russian experts and scholars to cooperate on relevant issues, and hopefully, the brotherly cooperation could yield more fruitful results.
Lieutenant-General Igor Makushev also expressed that this forum is of great significance. The Russian delegates had been paying great attention to it, and had decided to report to the President of the Russian Federation after the forum. The Ministry of National Defense also placed great emphasis on the “the World War II - Resistance and Post-War International Peace Research Institute” jointly built by Jilin University and Russian Academy of Military Sciences. He also expressed his hope that the experts and scholars in both countries can deepen cooperation and conduct a rich variety of researches and studies.
On the opening ceremony, Lieutenant-General Igor Makushev read the letter of congratulation sent by General Sergey Shoygu, Minister of Defense of Russia. President Li Yuanyuan, General Makhmut Gareev, Major General Wang Haiyun , senior advisor of China Institute for International Strategic Studies and vice chairman of Chinese Society for the Study of Sino-Russian Relations, and Paltov Sergey, Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Shenyang, attended the ceremony and delivered speeches. Chen Gang, Executive Vice President of Jilin University, hosted the ceremony.
President Li Yuanyuan pointed out in his speech that China and Russia are great nations and neighbors to each other, and they are important forces to guard international peace. They have fates closely related to each other, and have remained comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination in areas such as politics, economy, military affairs and culture for a long time. In order to develop China-Russia relationship in the new international context, the two countries should further strengthen non-governmental exchanges to enhance the mutual understanding and trust between the Chinese and Russian people. The joint research on World War II and War of Resistance could consolidate our agreements on safeguarding postwar international order, amplify the common grounds we have and uphold the historical justice of the victory of WWII and War of Resistance. This is crucial for consolidating and improving the soft power and safeguarding the interests in national security of China and Russia. “The World War II - Resistance and Post-War International Peace Research Institute” jointly built by Jilin University and Russian Academy of Military Sciences in 2015 aims exactly to continuously promote the joint researches in this field into greater depth.
General Makhmut Gareev noted in his speech that this forum is extremely meaningful for veterans who participated in the resistance during WWII like him. Chinese people had fought tenaciously in the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, and had made tremendous contribution to the world anti-fascism. They highly value such contribution. The Soviet forces, especially the Soviet pilots, also provided strong support for the anti-Japanese war and made due contributions, too. The experts and scholars of JLU and Russian Academy of Military Sciences have cooperated closely with each other to conduct relevant researches, and such cooperation has attracted the attention of Vladimir Putin, the President of the Russian Federation. The president hopes that the joint researches of Chinese and Russian experts and scholars can yield fruitful results.
On the opening ceremony, General Makhmut Gareev also made a keynote speech in which he described his personal experience of the resistance during the WWII.
After the ceremony, Bayanqolu, secretary of the CPC's Provincial Committee of Jilin province, met with the Russian delegates including General Makhmut Gareev and Lieutenant-General Igor Makushev. Li Yuanyuan, Chen Gang and Zhu Xianping, Director of Research Center of China-Russia Regional Cooperation, also attended the meeting.
The forum lasted 2 days with more than 100 experts and scholars from Russian Academy of Military Sciences, Military Scientific Committee of Russian Ministry of Defense, the Central Archive of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Military University of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Jilin University, China International Institute for strategic Society, PLA Academy of Military Science, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, China Institute of International Studies, Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall, Fudan University, China Foreign Affairs University, Beijing Normal University, and Jilin Provincial Archives, etc. They conducted in-depth discussions on issues like the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, postwar world peace, the roles of China and former Soviet Union and their cooperation, and the theoretical significance and practical ways of safeguarding international peace.
Other attendees of the meeting and the opening ceremony include Liu Debin, Associate Vice President of Jilin University and Dean of School of International and Public Affairs, and other senior officers from relevant departments like College of Northeast Asian Studies, Research Center of China-Russia Regional Cooperation, Office of Publicity, Office of President, Office of Social Sciences, Office of Global Engagement.
