On Oct. 30th and Oct. 31st, undergraduates from Jilin University won 2 gold medals in Biomolecular Design Competition (BIOMOD) 2016 and in International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition (iGEM) 2016 respectively.
The iGEM Competition was held at Hynes Convention Center from 27th , October to 31st ,October. The JLU Team “2016 Jilin_China” won the Gold Medal, standing out of 301 teams from all over the world and made a difference.
iGEM is a premier undergraduate Synthetic Biology Competition. It was first promoted by The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Synthetic Biology is a new area of biological research, fundamentally about the combination of biology and engineering.
The “2016 Jilin_China” team from Jilin University consists of 8 students from the Tang Aoqing Honors Program in Science, Biosciences, Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical Engineering, and Software Engineering. The team is supported by the Office of Undergraduate Education and the School of Life Sciences.
The team used engineered Bifidobacterium together with apoptin, signal peptide and TAT protein to selectively leading the apoptosis of solid tumor cells. They stuck to the tradition of independency in implementing the whole project. They designed the project, carried out the experiments, communicated with others and made the web page of the team themselves.
Student Advisors Lingyuan Meng, Xuerui Zeng and Huimin Li helped and focused to push forward the plans and keep the project on the right track throughout the process.
Jilin University first attended iGEM in 2014 and grow rapidly after winning the first Gold Medal of the competition. The University team also won a Sliver Prize and a Bronze Prize in the past.
The BIOMOD was held at University of California, San Francisco from 29th , October to 31st, October. The Jilin University team “NANO-JLU” had won the Gold Medal together with “PROJECT WEBSITE 3rd PLACE”.
BIOMOD is proposed by Wyss Institute of Harvard University. The competition aims to encourage undergraduate students to design more exquisite molecules. 24 teams from all over the world accomplished the projects and presented their projects at the jamboree.
The Jilin University team “NANO-JLU” consisted of 11 students from the Tang Aoqing Honors Program in Science, Biosciences, and Biotechnology. The team was also supported by the Office of Undergraduate Education and the School of Life Sciences.
“NANO-JLU Team” was also the only team from China that won the Gold Medal in BIOMOD 2016.
More and more students from Jilin University have benefited from participating international competitions. Therefore, students are gaining confidence for their future career and are more passionate in learning knowledge in their research areas. This is also part of the “Training plan of the national basic subject top-notch talent” of Jilin University, encouraging students to present themselves on international stages.
