From 20th to 22nd of October, University of Alberta Day at Jilin University (Medical Sciences) has been successfully held in Jilin University. On the evening of October the 20th , Prof. Yang Zhenbin, Chairman of University Council of Jilin University met Prof. Carl Amrhein, Deputy Minister of Alberta Health, Canada, one of foreign experts on undergraduate teaching assessment by the Ministry of Education and the delegation led by Prof. Richard Fedorak, Interim Dean of the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry of University of Alberta. Prof. CHEN Gang, Executive Vice President of Jilin University and Prof. LI Fan, Vice-President Level, Chancellor of Bethune Medical Sciences Center and together with Office of Global Engagement and the senior officials from Colleges of Faculty of Medicine all attended.
Prof. Yang Zhenbin, Chairman of University Council of Jilin University, extended a warm welcome to the delegation, appreciating Prof. Carl Amrhein, as a foreign expert, for his hard work in assessment and guidance of undergraduate teaching assessment on Jilin University. Prof. Yang Zhenbin expressed his appreciating for the cooperation between University of Alberta and Jilin University in recent years and his hope to extend cooperation in more fields of study, including medical sciences and further develop pragmatic collaborative programs to jointly promote in-depth talent education and scientific research of both universities.
Prof. Amrhein said that Alberta in Canada and Jilin Province in China shared similar geographic locations, so that problems encountered by Jilin University were also what the universities in Canada were faced with. He was very much confident in the development of Jilin University with a thorough and deepened understanding of teaching and management of Jilin University through the undergraduate teaching assessment. Prof. Richard Fedorak expressed his gratitude of Prof. Yang’s hospitality. This was his second visit to Jilin University and had engaged in several rounds of discussion as to fields such as joint cultivation of student and faculty exchanges. Jilin University and University of Alberta would sign three agreements of joint cultivation in terms of students and faculty exchanges. He hoped that these programs could serve as platforms for more students and faculty members to engage in exchanges and learning for flourishing development for both of our universities.
On October the 21st, “University of Alberta Day at Jilin University (Medical Sciences)” was held successfully in the International Conference Hall of Jilin University. Prof. CHEN Gang, Prof. Carl Amrhein and Prof. Richard Fedorak attended the opening ceremony and delivered their speeches. Hu Renyou, Director of Office of International Relations, Department of Education of Jilin Province and Representatives from Institutions of Medical Sciences in Jilin Province in Jilin Province and students from Faculty of Medical Sciences also participated in the events.
In the speech, Prof. CHEN Gang reviewed the history of cooperation between two universities and briefly introduced the current situation of Jilin University. He pointed out that the cooperation between Jilin University and University of Alberta enjoyed rapid development, especially the fruitful achievements in the field of medical sciences. As both parties have large space for cooperation and complementary advantages, he hoped that both universities could further expand and deepen the cooperation to more disciplines between the parties on the basis of cooperation in medical sciences, which could serve as a starting point for higher-level and more diverse and pragmatic cooperation in the future and open up a new dimension of cooperation for both parties.
Prof. Carl Amrhein began his speech by recognizing and appreciating the teaching assessment of Jilin University conducted by the Ministry of Education. He said that the teaching assessment was the most open, fair and comprehensive one his had ever experienced in his career and Jilin University’s achievements in various aspects and attitude towards challenges all impressed and inspired him. He hoped that the two universities could exchange and cooperate pragmatically for mutual learning and common development.
Prof. Richard Fedorak introduced the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of University of Alberta and looked forward to further cooperation in medical studies. He said that three agreements for joint cultivation of students in medical sciences were not only a good beginning for the cooperation between the two universities but also a good way of cooperation between China and Canada in medical studies.
In the opening ceremony, Prof. CHEN Gang, Prof. Richard Fedorak and Prof. LI Fan signed three agreements, namely “Memorandum of Understanding between Jilin University and the Governors of the University of Alberta”, “Service Agreement for the Global Medical Summer Program 2017” and “Service Agreement for the Young Physicians Training Program”. Moreover, Prof. CHEN Gang appointed Prof. Richard Fedorak as an Honorary Professor of Jilin University and conferred him the letter of appointment.
During the period, Prof. Richard Fedorak and Prof. Carl Amrhein delivered academic reports on Canadian Medical Education and Canadian Health Care and Insurance System successively. The delegation also paid visit to CRRC Corporation Limited, Fu Ao Community in Jiyue District and a health center in Kai An Town of Nong An County.
John Chiu, a clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Psychiatry of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and also the Chinese envoy representing the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, LI Xinmin, Professor and Chair of Department of Psychiatry and Renny Khan, Director of International Programs, International Health in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry are also delegates from University of Alberta.

University of Alberta has a reputation for its outstanding teaching and research standards, with the research of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, virus, tumor and transplanting among the top in the world.
The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry of University of Alberta, in particular, is among the earliest to integrate basic medical sciences and clinical medicine and to provide education in medical sciences with core courses including organ and system. In recent years, it is among the top 50 in Times World University Rankings in the field of medical studies.
