70 Productive Meetings During the 70th Anniversary Celebrations to Usher in a New Chapter for JLU’s Global Engagement

From September 15th to 18th, at the invitation of Jilin University, over 200 foreign representatives from 91 institutions of higher learning and research institutes in 22 countries and regions have attended a series of activities marking the 70th anniversary of Jilin University including the celebration rally, JLU Forum, celebration gala evening and JLU Family Day event, etc. Of the over 200 representatives, 25 are presidents (chairs of boards/councils) and 43 are vice presidents or the equal. Of all the present universities, 14 are Top 100 universities in the world and 22 are Top 200 worldwide.

During the celebrations, university leadership including Yang Zhen Bin, Li Yuanyuan, Cai Li, Chen Gang, Wu Zhenwu, Zheng Weitao, Sun Youhong, Li Fan and Associate Vice President Liu Debing received a total of 70 delegations. The delegations represent: University of Groningen in Holland, University of Trento in Italy, University of Nottingham in the UK, Queen’s University in Belfast, Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany, Ecole Centrale de Nantes in France, National Veterinary School of Alfort in France, Animal Health Laboratory of French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety, French Ministry for Agriculture and Food, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Saint Petersburg National Research University of Information, Technologies, Mechanics and Optics, Moscow State Institute of International Relations, National Research University—Higher School of Economics, Tomsk Polytechnic University, Northern-Eastern Federal University, Volgograd State University, Institute of Far Eastern Studies, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Belarusian State University, Belarusian National Technical University, University of Queensland, Macquarie University, Massey University in New Zealand, State University of New Jersey, University of Kentucky, University of Iowa, Kansas State University, Montana State University Billings, California State University Northridge, Kent State University, University of Toronto, Queen’s University, Universite Laval, University of Manitoba, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Tohoku University, Okayama University, Chiba Institute of Technology, Kitasato University, Seinan Gakuin University, The Japan Science Society, Nagoya University, Hokkaido University, Kwansei Gakuin University, Hitotsubashi University, Soka University, Keio University, Korea University, Hanyang University, Hana Financial Group, INTER-BURGO Group, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel, Eurasia-Pacific Uninet, National University of Mongolia, Mongolian University of Life Sciences, National Taiwan University, National Chiao Tung University, Feng Chia University, Chinese Culture University, National Dong Hwa University, Tunghai University, Shih Hsin University, National Taipei University, Ming Chuan University, Tamkang University, National Yang-Ming University, Chuang Shan Medical University, Yuanpei University of Medical Technology and University of Macau etc.

The meetings have produced a series of cooperation intentions in talents introduction, research collaboration, joint training for students, exchange programs for faculty and students and establishment of joint research  institutes. Also a group of cooperation programs have been finalized, which will send a number of faculties and students to above-mentioned universities for exchanges, further education or study for a degree. Outstanding teachers from above-mentioned universities will be sent to Jilin University to give lectures or for full-time employment.

Jilin University has signed framework agreement on cooperation, research collaboration agreement or agreement on student exchange programs with Chemnitz University of Technology, National Research University—Higher School Economics, Ecole Centrale de Nantes, University of Toronto, Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO for short). Also “History Research Center of Jilin University and Lomonosov Moscow State University” “China-Israel Joint Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship of Jilin University and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev” “Dinosaur Evolution Research Center of Jilin University” are inaugurated, setting up a more open cooperation platform for related disciplines in the university.

The title of honorary professorship of Jilin University were conferred to Prof. Sibrandes Poppema, President of University of Groningen, Prof. Vladimir Vasilyev, President of Saint Petersburg National Research University of Information, Technologies, Mechanics and Optics, Prof. Leonid V. Hubersky, President of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Prof. Susumu Satomi, President of Tohoku University, Prof. Kiyoshi Morita, President of Okayama University, Prof. Sakkie Pretorius, Vice President of Macquarie University of Australia, Prof. Daniel Robert Woolf, President of Queen’s University of Canada, Prof. Patrick C. Choy from University of Manitoba, Canada, and Prof. Robert Reisz ,academician of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada and professor of Toronto University. Three professors were appointed aschair professors of Jilin University,  they are Prof. Watanabe Yoshihito, council member and Vice President of Nagoya University, Prof. Araki Masaru, council member and Vice President of Okayama University and Dr. Timothy Huang, a renowned paleontologist. with these scholars and experts on board, Jilin University will definitely increase its level of  international academic research as well as university management.

Also held during the 70th anniversary celebrations were the Council Meeting of Confucius Institute of Jilin University and Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and the 11th International Cultural Festival of Jilin University.

Dozens of deans or vice deans of colleges or schools, directors or deputy directors of related administrative departments attended above activities, which not only facilitated the direct dialogue, understanding and practical cooperation of our university faculty and staff with their counterparts at our partner universities around the world, but also set up a platform for exchanging ideas, sharing experiences and conducting multilateral cooperation. Jilin University is marching with openness and vitality toward its goal of becoming a first-class university in the world. It is writing a new chapter for its international cooperation.
