During May 28-31, Jilin University-Rutgers University Graduate Student Research Forum was hosted in Jilin University. Professor Karen Ruth Stubaus, Vice President of Rutgers University for Academic Affairs and Administration led a delegation of 11 to attend all activities related to the Forum. Vice President Wang Lifeng of Jilin Univeristy attended the opening ceremony of the Forum, which was chaired by Zhang Guangcui, Director of the Office of Global Engagement and attended by heads from the Graduate School, Office of Global Engagement, School of International and Public Affairs, School of Chemistry and School of Environment and Resources and graduate student representatives. Professor Stubaus also gave a report on higher education in the US, which was participated by over 100 mid-level administrators from Jilin University.
The opening ceremony of the forum was hosted on the morning of May 30 in Dongrong Convention Center. At the ceremony, Vice President Wang first extended warm welcome to the Rutgers delegation, looked back on the 37-years cooperation between JLU and Rutgers University as well as the current situation of multi-layered and multi-area cooperation. He suggested that this Forum was made a mechanism so as to promote research and cultural exchange between graduate students from both sides. In his speech, President Stubaus thanked the warm reception and thoughtful arrangement made by JLU. He said that this Forum was a new project underlining the two universities’ cooperation, which would facilitate communication on frontline research fields for graduate students from all disciplines and catalyze cooperation in common response to global issues. Next year, Rutgers University would continue to send graduate students to JLU for academic exchange in Spring and reciprocal exchange by JLU students was expected in winter this year.
On the afternoon of May 30, Professor Stubaus delivered a report themed “US Higher Education” to JLU’s administrators and interacted with them on the management of faculties and staff in university. 8 doctoral students from Rutgers University participated in the research forum activities organized in groups by the School of Environment and Resources, School of Chemistry and School of Public Diplomacy.
On the morning of May 31, the delegation led by Professor Stubaus attended the Sino-US Youth Cultural Exchange Forum. Professor Han Xiping, Executive Deputy Dean of the Graduate School made a welcome speech and introduced the work of graduate student in JLU. On the forum, graduate students from both universities held discussions on topics concerned by youth from China and US.
Built in 1766, Rutgers University is credited as the “public Ivy”, the only public university from New Jersey in the Association of American Universities, and a member of Big Ten. In 2016, US News ranks 60th among its peers globally. Jilin University built partnership with Rutgers University in 1979. Both sides made a joint effort in building the Confucius Institute in 2007. In 2013, Jilin University American Study Center was launched. In 2015, Rutgers University Chinese Study Center was launched. Since 2009, about 600 students from Jilin University left for Rutgers University for short-term exchange during summer and winter vacations. Since 2012, Tang Aoqing Honor Program in Science has sent about 10 students majoring in chemistry each year to study in Rutgers University. In 2015, 20 mid-level administrators from Jilin University attended the “International Quality Improvement Program for University Administrators” in Rutgers University. In 2015, 11 graduate students from Jilin University participated in the “Sino-US Youth Academic Exchange Forum” held in Rutgers University.
