Jilin-Queen’s University International Week Held in Jilin University

May 17th to 19th, the International Week of Jilin University and Queen’s University Belfast was held in Jilin University. A delegation made up of 26 representatives and led by professor Patrick Johnston, vice chancellor of Queen’s University Belfast, participated in all activities of the International Week. Professor Chen Gang, Executive Vice President of Jilin University, attended the opening ceremony; Professor Liu Debin, President Assistant, hosted the opening ceremony; over 300 teachers and students from President Office, Graduate School, Development Planning Department, Division of Academic Affairs, Office of Global Engagement and other colleges participated in all activities of the International Week; over 100 chiefs of medium-level management divisions attended the lecture held by Chancellor Johnston about leadership and internationalization of universities.


During the opening ceremony of the International Week held in the morning of 18th, May, Professor Chen Gang warmly welcomed the delegation, reviewed the cooperation and exchanges between Jilin University and Queen’s University Belfast in the past 8 years, and suggested a more pragmatic and effective cooperation at higher levels and broader fields between the two sides after the International Week so as to support the common development of the two universities in the future. In his speech, Patrick Johnston expressed gratitude to Jilin University for the thoughtful and hospitable arrangements, and said that Queen’s University has always attached importance to cooperation with Chinese universities and regarded Jilin University as one of the important partners of strategic cooperation. The International Week this time will be the starting point of the comprehensive and multi-level cooperation between the two universities. After the opening ceremony, Professor Patrick Johnston delivered a special report over the topic of leadership and internationalization of universities for the 14th Management Staff Forum of Jilin University. The report was well received.



During the International Week, the delegation from Queen’s University had discussions with representatives from Tang Aoqing Honors Program in Science; they held four sessions for students from research fields of humanities, social science, medicine, agronomy, engineering, and natural science; and had work discussions with research and teaching staff from College of Humanities, College of Foreign Languages, College of Art, School of Foreign Language Education, School of Economics, School of Law, Business School, School of Mathematics, College of Chemistry, College of Food Science and Engineering, College of Electronic Science and Engineering, College of Computer Science and Technology, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences etc. The two sides agreed to promote the following cooperation: inviting teachers from each side for joint research project; exchange of teachers to lecture courses in each other’s classes; Short-Term Student Exchange, 2+2 Undergraduate Program, 1+1 Graduate Program and other double degree programs and joint cultivation programs for doctoral candidates.

In 2009, the cooperation between Queen’s University Belfast and Jilin University kicked off, and in 2010, the two sides established formal cooperative ties, and carried out frequent hi-level exchanges and close academic communications. In September 2015, a delegation from Jilin University led by the then vice Chairman of Jilin University Council Liu Xiaomin visited Queen’s University. During the visit, the two sides decided to hold the International Week between the two universities this year in order to expand and raise the level of cooperation.

Founded in 1845, the Queen’ University is one of the 10 most historic universities in UK. The university is located in the south of Belfast city of Northern Ireland. Up to date, only three universities have won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education for two times, one of which is Queen’s University.  Queen’s University has the best Medical School and College of Engineering, and the Business School and College of Management also rank as one of the best. Queen’s University has six faculties and colleges: Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; School of Law; Social and Educational Science; Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences; and Science and Agronomy. Queen’s University was ranked 183rd place globally in 2015/16 QS.
