November 18 to 20, General Makhmut Akhmetovich Gareyev, the President of Russian Academy of Military Sciences, led a delegation visited Jilin University. On November 20, President Li Yuanyuan and General Gareyev signed the cooperation agreement between Jilin University and Russian Academy of Military Sciences. Li Yuanyuan issued the letter of appointment of honorary professor and put a school badge of Jilin University to General Gareyev. General Gareyev issued the letter of appointment of honorary academician and put a badge of Russian Academy of Military Sciences to Li Yuanyuan. Li Yuanyuan and General Gareyev inaugurated the “World War II – Resistance and Post-War International Peace Research Institute” co-established by Jilin University and Russian Academy of Military Sciences. Such activities were attended by Chen Gang, the Executive Vice President, Yu Xiao, the Dean of Northeast Asia Studies College, Gong Yingchun, the Director of President’s Office, Wang Yuzhu, the Head of Publicity Department, Huo Zhigang, the Chief Director of Social Science Section, and Zhang Guangcui, the Chief Director of International Cooperation and Exchange Section.
In his speech, Li Yuanyuan first expressed his great respect and warm welcome to General Gareyev. General Gareyev, a hero in the war fighting against Fascism and Japanese militarism and a convicted guardian of the friendship between China and Russia, has made great contribution to the development of friendship between China and Russia, and enjoyed high prestige among Chinese people. Despite his advanced age of 92 and the cold weather in Northeast China, General Gareyev travelled all the way from Russia to Jilin University in Northeast China, which is deeply touching and admirable. Li Yuanyuan had great expectations for the prospect of the cooperation between Jilin University and Russian Academy of Military Sciences. He expressed his hope that, with the support from General Gareyev, the colleagues in both China and Russia would work together, further expand exchange areas and deepen cooperation areas, to make due contributions to promoting the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Russia and the lasting friendship between Chinese and Russian people.
In his speech, General Gareyev offered many suggestions and ideas for the World War II – Resistance and Post-War International Peace Research Institute co-established by Jilin University and Russian Academy of Military Sciences in terms of research directions, research methodology, and organizational structure, and he expressed his high expectations for the cooperation on research of World War II and Chinese people’s anti-Japanese war and post-war international peace.
On November 19, General Gareyev and Russian Navy Admiral Igor Nikolayevich Khmelnov made academic report titled with USSR’s Contributions in Crashing Japanese Militarism and Post-War World Order and Review on Russian Pacific Fleet’s Win over Japan and Post-War Russia-Japan Relation respectively to teachers and students of Jilin University.
Igor Nikolayevich Khmelnov, Russian Navy Admiral, Colonel Yevgeny Anatolyevich Yoshin, the assistant to President of Russian Academy of Military Sciences, Aliya Makhmutovna Kraynovo, the daughter of General Gareyev, Sergey Y.Paltov, the Consul-General of Russian Federation’s Consulate General to Shenyang, Damdinov, the First Secretary to Russian Federation’s Embassy to People’s Republic of China, and Shchepinin, clerk at Russian Federation’s Embassy to China, participated in part or all of the abovementioned activities.
General Makhmut Akhmetovich Gareyev, the President of Russian Academy of Military Sciences, was born on June 23, 1923 in of Chelyabinsk, Doctor of Science degree in History and Military Science, professor, and member of Academy of Science of Republic of Tatarstan. He graduated from Infantry Institute of Tashkent. He fought in west front, the third front in Belarus and the first front in far east in the Great Patriotic War. Then he graduated with excellent performance and awarded with gold medal from Frunze Military Academy and Military Academy of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR in 1950 and 1959 respectively. He served as the former Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR and currently is the president of the Russian Academy of Military Sciences (since 1995), the Inspector General Ministry of Defense, Chairman of Expert Commission of Military Industrial Commission of Russian Federation, Vice Chairman of Society Commission of Defense Ministry of Russian Federation, Chief Researcher of Military History Institute of Defense Ministry of Russian Federation, Editor-in-Chief of Academy of Military Sciences Paper, and Member of Editorial Board of Military Thoughts and Military History Magazine.
General Gareyev was awarded with Order of Lenin and Order of the Red Banner (four orders: 1944, 1945, 1967 and 1982), First Class of Order of the Patriotic War (two: 1944 and 1985), Order of Alexander Nevsky (1945), Order of the Red Star (two: 1943 and 1956), Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1981), Order for Service to the Homeland in the Armed Forces of the USSR (1975), Order of People’s Friendship (2003), Order of Homeland (2013), Frunze Award and Zhukov Russian Federation Award. September 3, 2015, invited by China, General Gareyev attended the Commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and The World Anti-Fascist War, during which President Xi Jinping awarded him memorial medal of 70th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
