Academician Li Yuanyuan-President of Jilin University-Invited to Attend the 7th China-South Korea University President Forum

On Nov 10th, 2015, at the invitation of the organizer, President Li Yuanyuan of Jilin University attended the 7th China-South Korea University President Forum and relevant exchange activities held in Hanyang University in Seoul. Ambassador Yang Houlan, Secretary General of Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) of China, Japan and the ROK, Ai Hong-ge, Educational Counselor from the Chinese Embassy in South Korea, Hee-ju Han, Chief of University Policy Division of South Korean Ministry of Education, Gu-wuck Bu, president of Korean Council for University Education attended the opening ceremony. Professor Liu Debin, Associate Vice President and others from Office of Global Engagement and College of International Education accompanied President Li in the forum.


President Li Yuanyuan delivered remarks at the opening ceremony on behalf of 18 institutions of higher learning from China. President Li pointed out that the forum, since its launch in 2007, has become an important platform for universities from both China and South Korea to share information and has made significant contributions to the progress of higher education of China and South Korea in the era of globalization. Nowadays, against the backdrop of China-ROK relationship entering into a new phase of comprehensive strategic partnership, China-South Korea University President Forum should all the more keep pace with times and contribute to the deepening of bilateral relationship, maintenance of peace and stability in North-east Asia, and, in particular, to talent cultivation and scientific research in the innovation-oriented society of the two countries. Jilin University, as initiator and champion of the forum, is willing to cooperate with all universities in China and South Korea to contribute, as always, to the innovation and development of cooperation and exchanges of higher education of China and South Korea.

Hee-ju Han, Gu-wuck Bu, and Ai Hong-ge also delivered remarks. Counselor Ai Hong-ge emphasized during the speech that China and South Korea have formed a community of shared interest and destiny, and higher education should play a greater role in economic and social development of the two countries. Ambassador Yang Houlan, Secretary General of Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS) of China, was invited as a special guest to deliver the keynote speech.

Over 100 delegates from 36 renowned universities of China and South Korea including Jilin University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Hanyang University, Sungkyunkwan University, and Ewha Womans University attended the forum. The delegates held in-depth discussion over the three topics “Cultivation of Integrated Talents”, “Internationalization Strategy of Universities”, and “MOOCs and Educational Reform” under the theme of “Opportunities and Challenges Facing China-South Korean Higher Education in An Era of Globalization”.

The 1st China-South Korea University President Forum was held at Korea University in October 2007. Since then, Jilin University, Yeungnam University, Renmin University of China, Hankuk University of Foreign Studies and Chongqing University played host to the 2nd to 6th forums respectively. It is known that the forum has been listed as a key cooperation project in the field of education under the framework of China-ROK Joint Committee on People-to-people Exchanges. The 8th China-South Korea University President Forum in 2016 will be hosted by Shandong University in China.
