On Nov 16, Li Yuanyuan, President of Jilin University received Academician Karpov, Dean, and Prof. Borodkin, Deputy Dean of Faculty of History, Moscow State University of Russia. Chen Gang, Executive Vice President, Liu Debin, Assistant to President, Yu Xiao, Dean of Northeast Asian Studies College, Huo Zhigang, Director of Division of Social Sciences, and Zhang Guangcui, Director of Division of International Cooperation of Jilin University attended the reception.
President Li Yuanyuan expressed his gratitude to Academician Karpov and Prof. Borodkin for their long-time support and help on cooperation between Jilin University and Moscow State University, and appreciation to cooperation between Faculty of History of Moscow State University and Northeast Asian Studies College of Jilin University on scholars exchanges, cooperation research and excellence training for many years. He said that the development of China-Russia relations provided unprecedented opportunities to further deepen cooperation between the two universities. Jilin University and Moscow State University has laid a solid foundation for cooperation in history, physics and geology for years. The two sides need to launch cooperation institutes, invest in research, and pragmatically carry out cooperation research and excellence training on the above-mentioned fields and even further, to build a brand platform for cooperation.
As honorary professors of Jilin University, Academician Karpov and Prof. Borodkin held deep feelings towards Jilin University. Academician Karpov mentioned that China and Russia both had long history and rich cultural traditions. These are precious treasures. Cooperation between the two universities on history research and cultural exchanges has significant importance. Furthermore, Jilin University has in-depth research on history, which is an important factor of its attraction to experts and scholars of Moscow State University.
The two sides discussed on cooperation between the two universities, and reached the following 5 aspects of agreement on conducting more pragmatic cooperation: 1. establishing regular high-level meeting mechanism, 2. conducting cooperative research, translating and publishing monographs and textbooks of the two universities, 3. holding regular international academic seminars on related fields, 4. providing financial support and encouraging professors to visit the other university, and 5. setting up specialized scholarship and providing financial support to visiting students.
Serguei Pavlovich Karpov, born in 1944, is a medieval historian and Byzantinist, renowned in Russia and the world. Mr. Karpov is acquainted with 9 languages. His main research is economic history of medieval Italy, the Mediterranean Coast and Byzantium, medieval archaeology of Western Europe, and historical inquiry. He has published over 330 science and research achievements, including 7 monographs. Mr. Karpov was awarded the 1st prize of Lomonosov, and elected as the academician of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences in 1992. He was awarded state prize of the Russian Federation and elected as a member of the Leibniz Association of Berlin, Germany, in 1996. He became the academician of communication of Russian Academy of Sciences in 2003, and the academician of Russian Academy of Sciences in 2012. Mr. Karpov was awarded the French Order of Academic Palms in 2004, and the Order of Friendship in 2005. He was appointed as the honorary professor of Jilin University in 2006.
Leonid I. Borodkin, born in 1946, is the Deputy Dean of Faculty of History and Dean of Center of Economic History of Moscow State University of Russia. He is the academician of Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, member of the Academic Council of Moscow State University, member of the Association of History and Computing, and member of the Executive Committee of the International Economic History Association. He was appointed as the honorary professor of Jilin University in 2006. Prof. Borodkin has refreshing understanding of research on Russian agricultural character and agricultural capitalism development level before the October Revolution, the labor market in the industrialization period, and social mobility of farmers and urban small business owners during the new economic policy period using quantitative methods. He has written 5 historic monographs and over 310 theses.
