On October 13th, Prof. Dr. Zhang Xi, President of Jilin University, was invited to attend the “2020 China-US University Presidents’ Online Forum,” jointly organized by Tsinghua University and Yale University. The forum was held via an online conference platform, with the theme of “Fostering More Open, Integrative and Resilient Universities”. Sun Chunlan, Vice Premier of the State Council, P.R.C., delivered her congratulatory remarks via video. Zhang Xi made a presentation entitled “Integrative Research and Learning at Jilin University”. Representatives from 20 universities in China and the United States participated in the forum to discuss on the development and cooperation in higher education between the two countries under the new situation.
Sun Chunlan pointed out that higher education represents a space of advanced collaborative exchange between China and the US, enhancing the mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of China and the US and promoting the development of China-US relations. She said she was hopeful that the universities of China and the US will, under the principles of openness and inclusiveness, leverage their complementarities and broaden the space for cooperation in education, research and joint programs. She also expressed her hope that universities enhance mutual learning through communication, and mutual trust through cooperation, and contribute to the building of a community of a shared future for the mankind.
Zhang Xi shared the concepts and practices of integrative research and learning at JLU, by presenting typical examples of integrative research and learning through interdisciplinary research at JLU that has promoted original research on organic electroluminescent materials, a series of “JLU” new rice varieties that has boosted poverty relief in rural areas, and multidisciplinary research results that have helped in fighting COVID-19. He expressed his belief that the interplay between Chinese and American ways of thinking will lead to the effective advancement of integrative research, integrative learning and integrative practice, which will benefit the people of both countries.
