From March 23rd to 24th, 2021, Dr. Zhang Guangcui, Director of Office of Global Engagement, Jilin University, attended APAIE 2021 Virtual Event as a BOD Member, on the invitation of the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE). On behalf of higher education institutions (HEIs) of Chinese mainland, Dr. Zhang delivered a keynote speech entitled Responses by HEIs in Chinese Mainland to the COVID-19 Pandemic in the Regional Report session.
Dr. Zhang shared the measures taken proactively by Chinese mainland HEIs in response to the severe challenges brought on by COVID-19, including ensuring the quality of teaching & learning, facilitating students’ career development, furthering international collaborations and taking social responsibilities actively. Over 300 educators and experts from different countries and regions attended this session online. After the speech, Dr. Zhang and other online attendees exchanged views regarding common concerns in countermeasures of Chinese mainland HEIs against COVID-19, policies to facilitate students’ employment, the resuming of international mobility in the post-pandemic era, and the effects of international relations on international cooperation in higher education.
In the Meet Your APAIE Directors session, Dr. Zhang, as an APAIE Director, co-hosted this session together with Prof. Chong Seung Yoon, Director of the Office of International Affairs and Director of the Confucius Institute, Hanyang University. In answering the questions put forward by online attendees, Dr. Zhang and Prof. Yoon introduced the resources of the APAIE platform and shared the measures of HEIs in China and ROK, respectively, in response to COVID-19. Dr. Zhang also shared the employment policies of China aimed at maintaining graduates’ job security, and Chinese HEIs and students’ consideration to resume offline international cooperation. Dr. Zhang and Prof. Yoon had a further discussion with the participants on how to expand multi-field cooperation during the pandemic.
The 2021 APAIE Virtual Event was comprised of various sessions, including Opening Ceremony, Close Ceremony, Live Global Dialogue, Regional Report, Look Ahead towards APAIE 2022, and Meet Your APAIE Directors. The event attracted over 1,200 educators from all over the world.
APAIE is an inter-university non-governmental international organization. It was co-founded in 2004 by 13 well-known universities from across the Asia-Pacific region, with the aim of promoting and facilitating the internationalization of higher education in the Asia-Pacific region and around the world. Jilin University and Renmin University of China are the only two BOD Member Universities in Chinese mainland. The APAIE 2021 Conference and Exhibition was held online due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
