To meet the increasing need of international community for Chinese language teaching talents and to promote the development of Chinese language teaching in countries around the world, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (hereafter referred to as CLEC) of the Ministry of Education of China sets up International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship (hereafter referred to as “the Scholarship”), to cultivate qualified international Chinese language teachers. Confucius institutes, independent Confucius classrooms, some HSK test agencies, relevant foreign educational institutions, Chinese language colleges/departments or Chinese language teacher training departments, foreign Chinese language teaching organizations, Chinese embassies/consulates (hereafter referred to as “recommending institutions”) can recommend excellent students and in-service Chinese language teachers to apply for the Scholarship to (further) study international Chinese language education and relevant subjects in Chinese universities (hereafter referred as “host institutions”).


As one of the host institutions, Jilin University (JLU) invites students and teachers from all other countries to apply for the Scholarship and study with us.


I. ELIGIBILITY

All applicants shall be:

1. Non-Chinese citizens;

2. In good physical and mental conditions, with good academic performance and conduct;

3. Committed to the Chinese language education and related work;

4. Between the ages of 16 and 35 (as of September 1, 2021). Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall not be over 45 years old, while undergraduate student applicants shall not be over 25 years old.


II. SCHOLARSHIP TYPES AND QUALIFICATIONS

1. Scholarship for Master’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL)

The program commences in September 2021 and provides scholarship for a maximum of two academic years.

Applicants shall hold a bachelor’s degree and have a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 5) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level). Priority will be given to applicants who provide a work contract with a teaching institution with which they will work upon completing their studies in China or a written proof to the same effect.

2. Scholarship for Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (BTCSOL)

The program commences in September 2021 and provides scholarship for a maximum of four academic years. Applicants shall hold a senior high school diploma and a minimum score of 210 on the HSK Test (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

3. Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study

The program commences in September 2021 and provides scholarship for a maximum of 11 months. International students currently studying in China are not eligible. This type of scholarship is classified into three subtypes:

3.1 TCSOL (Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages)

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 270 on HSK Test (Level 3) and an HSKK test score is required.

3.2 Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on HSK Test (Level 4) and 60 on the HSKK test (Intermediate Level).

3.3 Chinese Language Study

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 210 on HSK Test (Level 3). Priority will be given to applicants who provide an HSKK test score.

4. Scholarship for One-Semester Study

The program commences either in September 2021 or March 2022 and provides scholarship for a maximum of 5 months. Applicants holding X1 or X2 visas are not eligible. This type of scholarship is classified into two subtypes:

4.1 TCSOL, Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy

Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK Test (Level 3) and an HSKK test score is required.

4.2 Chinese Tradition Medicine, Taiji Culture

Applicants shall have HSK test score and priority will be given to applicants who also provide an HSKK test score.

5. Scholarship for Four-week Chinese Study

The program commences in July or December 2021 and provides scholarship for a maximum of four weeks. Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visas are not eligible.

Chinese Language Study, Chinese Traditional Medicine, Taiji Culture, Chinese Language + Chinese Family Experience

HSK score is required. Confucius institutes can organize group applications (with 10-15 participants per group). They shall contact host institutions to confirm study plans and submit the plans to CLEC before applying for review and approval.

III. APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Online registration will be available from March 1, 2021, on International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website (cis.chinese.cn).

Please log on to search for recommending institutions and host institutions, upload application materials online, track the application progress, comments and results. Scholarship awardees shall confirm with the host institutions to go through the procedures necessary for studying in China, print out the online scholarship certificate, and register at the host institutions on the designated date and time as per the letter of admission.

The application deadlines (Beijing Time):

1. Apr. 10, 2021 (4-week summer program in July)

2. May 10, 2021 (for those commencing in September)

3. Sept. 10, 2021 (4-week winter program in December)

4. Nov. 10, 2021 (for those commencing in March 2022)

CLEC will entrust an expert panel to review the applications. Decisions will be made based on HSK and HSKK scores and levels, and in consideration of country distribution as well as other factors. The results will be published about three months before the school starts.

IV. CHINESE BRIDGE AWARD RECIPIENT POLICIES

Chinese Bridge winners who have been awarded the 2021 International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship shall log onto the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website and submit documents to host institutions upon presenting their scholarship certificates.

V. OTHERS

1. Applicants shall understand JLU’s admission requirements and host disciplines, and upload application materials as per relevant regulations.

2. Degree-seeking students are subject to the annual assessment according to the Annual Appraisal Procedures of International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship.

3. Those scholarship awardees who fail to register on time, fail the health assessment, drop out midway and/or are suspended from school will be deprived of their scholarship.

4. JLU’s register time is in September 2021 or March 2022 and please refer to Jilin University Letter of Admittance for the detailed schedule.
