Overview

Jilin University is a nationally recognized pioneer and leader in computer science education and research. The College of Computer Science and Technology (CCST) at Jilin University plays a significant role in the establishment and development of China’s Computing Disciplines and is one of the first institutions to exploit Artificial Intelligence (AI) research in China. The history of CCST began with a program in cybernetics initiated in 1958 by Academician Wang Xianghao, a founder of China’s Artificial Intelligence discipline. In 1976, the Department of Computer Science was formally established. In May 2001, CCST took its current form following the merger of Jilin University, Jilin University of Technology, Changchun University of Science and Technology, and Changchun Institute of Posts and Telecommunications.


The College of Computer Science and Technology has assembled a strong and age-diverse team of scholars with a wide range of expertise. It currently has over 260 full-time employees, including a total of 194 faculty members that contains 54 professors and 72 associate professors. Over 80% of the faculties are doctoral degree holders and they have earned distinction in teaching, scholarship and professional service. Currently, the faculty team includes 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2 experts in the national "Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project”, 1 chair professor of Cheung Kong Scholar, 1 nationally outstanding teacher, 3 chair professors in the national “Thousand Talents Program”, 1 member of the assessment group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, 6 State Council Experts for Special Government Allowance, 4 experts in the “New Century Excellent Talents Program of the Ministry of Education”, 1 experts in the “Hundred Talents Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences”, 9 Baosteel outstanding teachers, 2 members of the State Education Commission, 4 provincial-level outstanding teachers, 1 provincial-level eminent expert, 5 provincial-level senior experts, 8 young professionals who have made prominent contributions to Jilin Province, 11 provincial-level outstanding and innovative talents, 3 Changbai Mountain Scholars, 1 leading subject matter experts of Jilin Province, 4 winners of the “Youth Science and Technology Award of Jilin Province”, 4 winners of the “Excellent Youth Fund of Jilin Province”, etc.


CCST has been funded to offer doctoral programs in two major fields—Computer Science and Technology and Software Engineering, and it is among the firsts to set up post-doctoral fellowship programs in China. Its Computer Science and Technology discipline was rated as A- in a nationwide assessment in 2017 and it has been listed under the national Project 985 and Project 211, as well as the Double First-Class Project of Jilin University. The College currently has 5 doctoral programs under subjects of Computer Software and Theory, Computer Application Technology, Computer Architecture, Software Engineering and Bioinformatics, and 4 master’s degree programs under the subjects of Computer Software and Theory, Computer Application Technology, Computer Architecture, and Network and Information Security. Among others, its Computer Software and Theory is recognized as one of the national key disciplines, and its Computer Application Technology and Computer Architecture are enlisted as leading disciplines of Jilin Province.


With a mission to provide the nation and society with qualified talents, CCST has always been dedicated to enabling students to think critically and have a good command of their theoretical and professional knowledge. Over the years, CCST graduates have been working in and outside of China as educators, researchers, public servants, military personnel, businesspersons, and so on. Notable alumni include Academician of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering Li Kai, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences Huai Jinpeng, world-renowned Artificial Intelligence expert Zhang Chengqi, etc. Over 20 graduates have been selected as nationally outstanding talents and many of them are now serving as heads of Computer Science Schools at prestigious universities.


CCST offers 3 undergraduate majors under subjects of Computer Science and Technology, Network and Information Security, and Internet of Things Engineering, as well as an experimental undergraduate program which is a part of the “National Experimental Project for Top Students of Foundation Subjects”. The Computer Science and Technology major was selected into the first batch of national first-class undergraduate pilot majors and recognized as one of the provincial featured specialties. It has been accredited by the International Engineering Education Accreditation in 2011 and 2017 respectively. The Internet of Things Engineering major was selected into the second batch of national first-class undergraduate pilot majors.


CCST has 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers for Experimental Computer Teaching and Internet of Things Virtual Simulation, and a range of other state-of-art facilities to provide strong supports for teaching and research. The teaching faculties are uniquely qualified and have made outstanding achievements in pedagogical reforms and curriculum design. At present, there are 1 national outstanding teaching team, 7 provincial-level outstanding teaching teams, 7 national renowned courses, and 2 excellent courses for IBM and Microsoft funded by the Chinese Ministry of Education. In 2014, CCST faculty members excellently won two second prizes of the National Teaching Awards. In 2018, they won another two second prizes and one first prize. Currently, 2148 undergraduate students, 590 master’s students, and 228 doctoral students are enrolled in various programs offered by the College, ranking top among schools at Jilin University. Over the past decades, CCST has been committed to educating qualified and high-level computer professionals who meet the needs of society. It has paid high attention to students’ sense and capability of innovation and helped many students to achieve excellent performance in domestic and international academic conferences and competitions.


CCST is also home to 12 ministerial and provincial research platforms, including 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 1 key national defense science and technology laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 1 engineering center of the Ministry of Education, 1 key national defense discipline laboratory, 3 key laboratories of Jilin Province, 2 engineering research centers of Jilin Province, 1 science and technology innovation center of Jilin Province, 1 international science and technology cooperation base of Jilin Province, 1 key supporting technology engineering laboratory of Jilin Province, and another 4 university-level research platforms.


Grounded on theoretical studies and catering to national and local needs, CCST has been working to make full use of Jilin University’s advantage in having a complete range of disciplines and focusing its academic attention on the basics of computer applications and interdisciplinary research. A good number of internationally recognized research results in fields of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Software and Theory, Computer Network, Information Security, High-Performance Computing, Bioinformatics, Smart Ocean, and National Defense Science and Technology, have made CCST a prestigious academic institution distinctive for its expertise in theoretical exploration and applied research. These research results have been widely applied to key industries of Jilin Province like agriculture, automobile, and information security, and generated substantial economic, social, and ecological benefits. With a steady increase in funding for academic research, high-quality papers and invention patents of CCST faculty members are growing rapidly. From 2016 to 2020, CCST faculty members have undertaken over 200 ministerial and provincial programs with total funding of 145 million yuan, published more than 700 SCI papers, won 20 ministerial and provincial awards, and patented 124 inventions. CCST has played an active part in implementing national policies and strategies through various channels and at diverse levels. It has also vigorously engaged in action plans to promote the development of Jilin Province and the revitalization of Northeast China, keeping its development in line with social and economic changes. Moreover, it has attached high importance to strengthen its cooperation with other Chinese universities and enterprises and made full use of its advantages in research and personnel to facilitate the development of strategic emerging industries in areas of Intelligent Connected Vehicles (ICVs), agricultural informatization, and so on.


CCST has been strengthening international exchanges and cooperation to uplift its level of internationalization and academic influence. Leading scholars of the College are either serving in renowned academic associations or being members of the editorial board of influential scholarly journals. In recent years, CCST has organized over 10 international academic conferences including the 43rd International ACM SIGIR Conference on Research and Development in Information Retrieval (SIGIR 2020), the 11th ACM International Conference on Web Search and Data Mining (WSDM 2018), and the 11th International Conference on Knowledge Science, Engineering and Management (KSEM 2018), founded and continuously held the International Conference on Underwater Networks & Systems (WUWNet) and the International Conference on Systems Biology (ICSB), invited winners of Turing Award, academicians, IEEE Fellows, ACM Fellows to deliver about a hundred of speeches or lectures, established long-term partnerships with many research institutions home and abroad, and undertook a number of international cooperation programs. More than 10 of the world’s top 100 universities have signed student exchange agreements with CCST including Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, University of California, Cambridge University, Kyoto University, National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University, etc., and 50% of these universities ranked in the world’s top 30.


CCST has a solid academic background and a tradition of academic excellence. In 2015, Jilin University established an advisory committee for Computer Science development to offer consultations on the development of related disciplines. The advisory committee is headed by Professor Li Kai from Princeton University, a distinguished CCST Alumni and an academician of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and it also includes some other nationally or internationally recognized experts. Looking into the future, CCST will seize every opportunity to promote its long-term and sustainable development, encourage original research, foster interdisciplinarity and collaborated innovation, and improve the faculty’s academic and innovative capabilities. It will continue to strengthen partnerships with domestic and international institutions, enhance high-level personnel exchanges and training, uplift its level of internationalization and academic influence, and build itself into a domestically first-class and internationally recognized education and research center to make its due contribution to the economic and social development of China.

Teaching Faculty

Research and teaching of Computer Science and Technology are distinctive for their frequent references to other disciplines, particularly Mathematics. CCST has a strong faculty team with diverse expertise. Besides academic studies, the faculties have also vigorously devoted themselves to teaching activities and achieved outstanding results.

CCST has 1 nationally outstanding teaching team, 7 provincial-level outstanding teaching teams, 7 nationally renowned courses, and 2 excellent courses for IBM and Microsoft funded by the Chinese Ministry of Education. In 2014, CCST faculty members excellently won two second prizes of the National Teaching Awards. In 2018, they won another two second prizes and one first prize. Over the past years, they have all together won 4 provincial-level teaching awards and 15 provincial-level educational technology awards, and have undertaken 2 state-level pedagogical reform programs and 13 provincial programs. Eleven CCST teachers have been honored as “outstanding educators”. In addition, the faculties have published over 80 monographs and textbooks and more than 130 pedagogy-related papers.


Teaching Philosophy and Achievements

Over the years, CCST has cultivated a great number of qualified talents with solid theoretical knowledge and a valuable spirit of innovation. According to incomplete statistics, more than 40 CCST graduates are working as professors at universities all over the world, 2 working as senior computer scientists in the U.S., 1 being rewarded the Special Presidential Award of the United States, 1 being entitled as Top Young Scientists in the United States, and over 20 holding important positions in renowned enterprises in and outside of China. In addition, more than 20 graduates have been selected as nationally outstanding talents and many of them are now serving as heads of Computer Science Schools at prestigious universities.


CCST is committed to enabling students to make practical use of their knowledge and has a strong teaching faculty equipped with state-of-art pedagogical skills. CCST now is in possession of 3,000 square meters laboratories with over 2,300 sets of apparatuses and devices. The total value of these apparatuses and devices has exceeded 12 million yuan. It has also established 7 teaching laboratories that allow 120 students to conduct experiments together.


Giving due consideration to features of the College and computing disciplines, CCST has devoted itself to the fundamental task of “Fostering Virtue through Education”. The revised CCST curriculum has made it possible to integrate moral education into the process of knowledge imparting and capability building. CCST is putting more effort into building demonstration courses integrating expertise and moral education. With proper publicity and extensive training, these courses will be of real help to create a better atmosphere for moral education. CCST has been calling on students and teachers to learn from Academician Wang Xianghao, an exemplary scholar and a founder of CCST the spirit of science and patriotism, and encouraging them to pay special attention to political and moral issues in the process of academic research.


Upholding the vision of integrating theoretical education with professional practices, CCST has dedicated itself to creating opportunities for students to practice their knowledge. It has assisted students in founding a variety of clubs and associations such as the China Computer Federation (CCF) Jilin University, the M.M Society, the Cybersecurity Association, and the ACM Group, and initiated the “Cybersecurity Day”, “Teachers’ Month”, and some other signature campaigns. Besides, CCST also set up official WeChat accounts and WeChat groups to connect with students and widen channels of education. The mini-movie Mission and Responsibility filmed by CCST won the first prize in the 2020 Jilin provincial contest. CCST students have been among the “Outstanding Post-graduate Student of Jilin University” for four consecutive years from 2016 to 2019. Fifteen students have won the annual award of “CCF Outstanding College Student”. Two post-graduate students have been honored as “Outstanding Party Member of Jilin University” at the 98th anniversary of the Communist Party of China. Eight Doctoral dissertations have been enlisted as “Outstanding Dissertation of Jilin Province” and 30 master’s theses have been selected as “Outstanding Thesis of Jilin Province”. CCST post-graduate students have won 25 awards in state-level and international competitions, patented over 200 inventions and software and published more than 300 academic papers. Adopting a teaching paradigm that integrates industry, education, and research, CCST has established partnerships with a number of IT companies like Qihoo 360 and Jida Zhengyuan Technology to build internship bases customized for post-graduate students and cultivated a good number of professional talents with a solid knowledge foundation, strong practical capabilities, and rich social experiences.

In recent years, CCST has invited over 50 renowned experts from the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, Sweden, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, etc. to give lectures and conduct academic exchanges and research cooperation. CCST has established partnerships for joint research with the National High-Performance Computing Institute of Singapore, the Automation and Computer-aided Engineering Department at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Concurrent Engineering Institute at the University of Virginia, the Electronic and Computer Engineering Department at the University of British Columbia in Canada, the Mechanical Engineering Department at the National University of Singapore, the Information and Communication Technology Department at the University of Trento in Italy, and the Computer Science Department at the Stockholm University in Sweden, and some other world-renowned universities and institutes, signed cooperation agreements with the University of California San Diego, become a member of the PRAGMA for joint research in areas of bioinformatics, grid computing, etc., participated in EU East Web cooperation programs, E.U. Bridging the Gap cooperation programs, and PRAGMA cooperation programs. CCST has also established partnerships with world-famous IT companies and research institutes such as IBM, Microsoft, ORACAL, SUN, HP, Ricoh, and BEA, to conduct personnel training programs and technological exchanges.


CCST has invited J. David Puett, a world-renowned biochemist and the Chair of Biochemics and Molecular Biology Department at the University of Georgia, David Lorge Parnas, the Director of Software Quality Research Laboratory and an academician of the Royal Society of Canada, to be honorary professors of Jilin University, and appointed Doctor Xu Ying, a world-class computational biologist, a professor from the Biochemics and Molecular Biology Department at the University of Georgia, and an outstanding scientist from the Computational Biology Institute of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Doctor Gong Leiguang, a senior research fellow in IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center, Doctor Yang Hongji, a professor from the Computer Science Department at the De Montfort University, and Doctor Y. V. Ramana Reddy from the Concurrent Engineering Research Center at the University of Virginia as guest professors.
